Analysis Workspace: create a new "Time Between Events" visualization

Description -

Measuring the time between events is an area that is often asked about by our users of Adobe Analytics and is an important measure of improvement for many processes.

At the moment if we want to find the time between events we can set custom code up for each specific scenario and pass this into an event, build some calculated metrics etc. but this is a very clunky and inflexible way to operate.

I can't help thinking this is an area that Adobe could do something really special in.  I'm imagining a new visualisation that you could drop 2 events into and it would spit out a whole host of metrics and visualisations (average time, histogram of time take with minute buckets, average time trended over time, percentiles etc.).

Why is this feature important to you -

Time between events is important metric for our Adobe Analytics users and there is no out of the box support for it (solutions seem to require custom coding which is comparably inflexible).

How would you like the feature to work -

New workspace visualisation

Current Behaviour -

No out of the box support

Hi Andrew,

I was just coming here to search on this topic and your post was the first thing that popped up.  We have implemented the Time Between Events plug in, passing the value into an sprop.   The time can be in any granularity, right now we have a mixture of minutes and seconds.  What we really want to do is get an average of these props to provide one metric to the end user which can be used as a valuable indicator.  I can't figure out how to create a calculated average metric from a column of props.  I played around with a calculated metric, but don't think it's working how I would like.  This is an idea of what I am describing.    Would love for feedback/suggestions!

@JSP2  Hi Jen, somehow missed this when you originally posted.  Just in case it is still relevant to you here are my thoughts...

If you want to do averages you need to be putting the value into an event rather than a prop.  This is because props store the number as text and therefore it isn't normally possible to do numeric calculations on them.  Whereas if you store the number in an event, it is treated as a number and you can perform calculations.

Having said that, if you have already gone down the prop route and you really need a way to create an average there is a work around which I have described in this blog post...

Hi Andrew! Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.  I will keep this in mind for the future.  We ended just tabling this at the time and it never was picked up again.

Take care,

Hi Andrew,

I have another use case to capture dollar amounts and have the ability to then sum the values.   How would I store the value in an event, per your recommendation?

Example: A customer enters an amount ($1-$20) as a donation with their payment, or they have the option to enter a custom $ amount. We want to capture the amount and have the ability to sum the dollars for a total amount of donations submitted in a given period of time.

Thanks in advance!
