Create dynamic content for email without complex if-then-else rules

We need to personalize emails based on several attributes from a customer profile:

• Customer Name
• Country
• Product Category Favorites

Problem

There are LOTS of countries and LOTS of Product Categories.  I do not want to write hundreds of conditional rules to run the campaign, nor do I want to maintain such a complex process.

Is there a way to use a look up file or a map datatype attribute  or some expression in the personalization script editor that looks up the content I need given a value in the customer's profile to return for use in the personalization block?

I could not find such a capability in the Adobe documentation.
