Why can't I change a Simple Duration type to a Calculated Assignment duration type?

Most of our tasks have a single assignee and are organized under parent tasks. Some of the tasks are showing a simple duration type, but are not allowing me to switch them to a Calculated Assignment (or any other duration type). Does anyone know what could be causing this?
