Question

What is a root project?

Can someone explain what a “Root Project” is and how they could be used? I’m working on a report and noticed values for “Root Project” as an option when I add a column. I can’t find any documentation on that value or any fields with that name. None of my projects have any value in any of those fields when I include them in a report.

Our large campaigns use a project for concept development. We add a project for each type of deliverable and link them together in a program. It might be valuable to us to name the concept development project as a root project.

Hi @KariB93WI

In Workfront, "Root Project" is the top‑level project in a project hierarchy – i.e., when you use subprojects / project‑to‑project hierarchy:

  • For a subproject, Root Project = the very first (top) project in that chain.
  • For a stand‑alone project with no parent/children, the root project field is typically empty or not populated, which is why you're seeing blanks.

So:

  • You don't "mark" a project as a root project in the UI – Workfront calculates it automatically when projects are linked hierarchically.
  • If your campaigns are just separate projects linked together by Program or Portfolio, not as subprojects, then the Root Project fields will stay empty, and your "concept development" project won't show up there automatically.
  • If you want to treat a concept‑development project as the "root" for reporting, use a custom field (e.g. "Campaign Root?" = Yes/No) or a naming convention, and report/group on that instead of the Root Project fields.

In other words, Root Project is a technical field for true project hierarchies, not a general "campaign parent" flag—your idea is right conceptually, but you'll want a custom field to drive that behavior today.

@AmitVishwakarma

You mention “Workfront calculates it automatically when projects are linked hierarchically.”  In Workfront core, can you now link projects hierarchically?  Is this new functionality that is not completely built out yet?  Or is this possibly part of “Workfront Planning”?

I also cannot find any documentation.

Essentially I would love to know how one sets one project as a “root project” for another project.

Like @KariB93WI we have planning projects that hold concepts and initial documentation, then other projects are created as the project starts executions.  This could be an interesting concept.
