How to show Portfolio and Program Relationship

In our organization, each business unit (BU) has its own portfolio. Within these portfolios, programs are organized and aligned to the respective BU. However, is there a solution for a program to span across multiple BUs—essentially, for a single program to be associated with more than one portfolio?

Hi @shannabo -

It is a one to one relationship, a Program can only be associated to one Portfolio. I like to think of Portfolio/Programs as files on your computer a main folder (Portfolio) with sub folders (Programs)

Generally, there is a one-to-one relationship between programs and portfolios. However, there are cases where a single program may be associated with two distinct portfolios. In these situations, when two business units (portfolios) collaborate on a single project (program), both units seek to receive equal recognition for their contributions to the project.

If you want to achieve this, you can create a custom field named “Active BUs” and list all Business Units as checkboxes.

This will allow you to select multiple BUs for a single program and reflect shared contributions.

I think the question to ask here is for what purpose. One way to accomplish this is to make a multi select external lookup field to be a portfolio picker.

You can see a similar picker at work here:
