Hour Report, Portfolio Chart + Monthly Filter + Sort by Hours Descending

I'm building a report to track hours invested per portfolio per month and running into two issues. Would love to know if anyone has found a solution.

Issue 1 — Portfolio chart in an Hour report

I built an Hour report with filters for the current month ($$TODAYbm / $$TODAYem) and groupings by Portfolio and Project. The monthly filter works perfectly, but when I try to build a chart, Portfolio Name doesn't appear as a Y axis option (only Project Name and Owner show up.)

I switched to a Project report to get Portfolio on the chart, but then I lose the ability to filter hours by month since Actual Hours on projects are cumulative totals.

Is there a way to have both a monthly hour filter AND a Portfolio chart in the same report?

Issue 2 — Sort chart bars from most to least hours

In my chart, the bars are sorting alphabetically by Portfolio name. I want them to sort descending by hours so the portfolio consuming the most hours appears first. I've tried adding sort order in the Groupings text mode but the chart still sorts alphabetically.

Is there a way to force a value based sort on a Workfront chart?

Thanks in advance!

You might need to look into canvas dashboards for this. Here’s what I could pull together from my test drive data:

  1. Canvas naturally sorts itself from big to little.
  2. No text mode needed for the report.
  3. I couldn’t test “monthly” because this is test data so I have no idea what it’s dated from. But there are wildcards in here so this technically could work.

Hi skyehansen, thank you so much for your response! This is exactly what I'm looking for. I have access to Canvas Dashboards but when I add my Hour report, it displays the chart exactly as configured in the original report ,I don't see any option to reconfigure the chart axes inside Canvas.

Could you tell me how you configured the Y axis to show Portfolio Name instead of Project? Did you use a specific feature inside Canvas to set that up, or did you configure it differently in the report itself?

Also, I noticed "Browse blueprints" shows as Coming Soon in my Canvas,  is that what you used to build the chart?

One more thing!  in our setup, Hours and Portfolios live in different objects (Hours are logged at the task level and Portfolios are two levels away: Hour → Project → Portfolio). Could that be affecting why Portfolio doesn't appear as a chart axis option in our instance?

Thank you!

@SaraHi4 -- to your first paragraph above, yes you would have to build it entirely in canvas. Second paragraph -- let me paste a quick screenshot of how I built out the bar chart below. You can probably do similar -- so yes, it’s a specific feature inside canvas, I used a canvas chart report.

Third paragraph -- no, I just hashed it out based on what you were saying.

One more thing… yes, they are many levels away. It goes Hours - Tasks - Project - Portfolio. You probably had to list it using text mode, and it is the text mode that prevents portfolio showing up as an axis option. Charts only use standard mode objects, not text mode. Many admins have to resort to bringing their portfolio closer (e.g. a custom field on the Project custom form that shows Portfolio Name, would probably work). This workaround isn’t necessary on Canvas so it also reduces the number of fields you have to maintain.
