Heat Map for Utilization/Availability in Resource Availability Matrix

We just started to introduce senior management to resource management and already they are having a difficult time trying to get a quick gauge of availability using the matrix view. I have discussed the possibility of creating a report based on the data but there were immediate concerns about the data being static and their inability to filter on the fly, as is available with the Resource Planner and Scheduling tool. This report would give a clear and quick indication of who's in the red or not and greatly assist with the work management process.
