Editing a custom form (mid approval path)

We currently have (by default) the set up that custom forms linked to a request, cannot be changed while being approved. I'd like to set up an approval route which does allow the custom form to be added to mid approval. How do I do this for one approval path but leave others not allowing changes to custom form??
