Does anyone know if you can customize the top area of a project landing page? It currently shows % Complete, project owner, planned completion date, status and condition. I would like to add another field for certain layout templates.

Unfortunately, you can't modify that region of the project page. Using custom tabs in the layout template is what gives you the canvas needed to build a project overview where you can "add fields". This concept is explained in WFPro Live 6 in the "Utilize Custom Tabs to Display Object-Specific Information" segment. Once you master this skill, you'll have much more control over what people see when interacting with your project summary. Here's an example I've been working on:
