Display of WF Items Stacked as Subtasks vs Separate Stories with Cards in Swimlanes

When I planned a team's work with the team recently, it resulted in this view of cards and stories. This is what I'd like all our boards to look like. But another team's board looks like this instead with the parent in the columns vs the story. Any help on what I can do to get the parent into the story side with independent cards in the swimlane? Sometimes you just need to write it in public to figure it out. The items showing up as a drop down were not assigned to the team in addition to the user. Adding the team as assignee converted the list to cards. Parke Brown
