Custom Prompt - Dynamic Select

Hello!

Is it possible to create for a report custom prompt a dynamic select? I want for the prompt to load all my projects from a desired program so I can make a chart for each of them without having to build a report for each project to create the desired chart, given that I would create more projects and complete some others.

Thanks!

HI @SanchoMa

No – you can't have a custom prompt whose dropdown dynamically auto‑loads "all projects in Program X". Prompts in Workfront are either:

  • Standard field prompts (type‑ahead on a field like Project Name/Project ID), or
  • Custom prompts with fixed options you define manually in text mode.

They don't support "dynamic select" options based on another object (like Program).

Practical pattern for your use case:

  • Build one Project report.
  • In the Filter, hard‑code your Program: Project > Program ID = <your program>
  • Add a Project Name (or Project ID) prompt to the report.
  • Build your chart grouped by Project Name.

Result:

The report only ever looks at projects in that Program. The prompt lets you pick which project to focus on (type‑ahead). New projects in that Program show up automatically, no need to rebuild reports.

I’m not entirely clear from your post what your goal is. (loading your projects so you can “make a chart for each project” sounds like you’re expecting there to be five charts if you have five projects, vs 10 charts if you have 10 projects, so I just want to say up front this is definitely not how workfront works).

Assuming you just want a report/chart that gives you particular details about projects that are in that program -- currently (Mar 2026) the only way to do this is to build your project chart (in Classic reporting), add it to a (classic) dashboard and then add the dashboard as a custom section to your program. For example using a layout template would also effectively add it to all users that are assigned to that layout template.

You’ll notice that the dashboard in the program, has effectively been filtered to only that projects in that program would show, and hence any charts would fluctuate based on whatever program the dashboard is in.

I think Canvas dashboards are approaching parity with respect to being added as a custom section to an object like a program… I don’t think this functionality has been activated at this time.
