Can a field in a custom form be archived or removed without losing the historical data?

I have a field in a custom form that I will not use going forward, is there a way to archive the field? What happens if I remove the field, will I lose all the historical data?  The data in the field is used on a report provided to internal customers so I want them to be able to see the historical data that was entered in the field previously.

Correct, if you remove the field you will lose all the historical data. I'd suggest making another section at the bottom of the form, e.g. "Archived fields" and put your field in there. Make the section visible to all but editable by only admins, and that should make sure no one is able to add or change any values.
