Adobe Marketo Engage General

On a recent Marketing Nation thread, a developer had questions about the Get Folders API endpoint, one of Marketo’s paginated endpoints that returns folders in batches of (up to) 200:   While paging through /rest/asset/v1/folders.json using the offset parameter, we are seeing duplicate folder ids in later pages that were returned in earlier pages.e.g. with a maxReturn=200 and offset=0, we get folder id 130 in the results. Then with the same maxReturn=200 and offset=200, we again get folder 130 in the results. A brief moment of 😵‍ is understandable, but this behavior makes perfect sense.   See, each page is computed upon request. There’s no pre-computed result set containing all pages as of a point in time. (More on this in the notes.) So the underlying database state can easily change while you’re fetching pages.   Take a folder tree like this:   Let’s fetch the root and the first subfolder: https://123-ABC-456.mktorest.com/rest/asset/v1/folders.json

In today's fast-paced marketing world, seamless integration between tools is not just a luxury—it's a necessity. One of the most powerful duos is Marketo Engage and Salesforce (SFDC). When used correctly, they can transform how you manage leads. But what happens when you need more than a simple sync? Custom frameworks come to the rescue.    Why We Need a Custom Solution For our case, we are not syncing every record from Marketo Engage to SFDC. In fact, we are only syncing 20% of the Marketo Engage database to SFDC. The main reason we are not syncing most of our records is that we are not only looking at their scoring as a qualifier but also at many other data points, including whether the person provided a business email, if they are a student, or if they are an employee. We only want to sync records that align with our strict policies related to customer and account validation, ensuring that the individual is indeed associated with a legitimate business account.

Adobe have announced a while ago that the login experience for Marketo Engage will be migrated to Adobe ID. A welcome step in the process of integrating Marketo Engage into the Adobe Experience platform for many, but in the process I have seen several threads on the Community and other platforms where users ran into problems with the migration process. After liaising with the product team, here’s some tips on how navigate the process smoothly.   Communication with your Marketo Engage System Admin   You will be alerted via your Marketo Engage System Admin that the migration of your instance is scheduled. However, for many Marketo Engage customers it is not very clear who has the role of System Admin, they may not be an actual Marketo Engage user or have left the company. So if you want to be on top of the process and are unsure of who the System Admin is, I suggest to contact Marketo Support. They can tell you who has this role and can process a request to change this too. If

We've all had these moments of dread. Your Salesforce admin pings you on Instant Message, and asks you... "Why is Marketo updating {insert random data value not associated at all with Marketing}?"  You go into Marketo, and upon doing some research you find that the record was indeed updated, but in the Marketo Activity Log you can clearly see that the record update was made by "sfdc" (Salesforce).   You, after conducting some research/troubleshooting, reply back to your Salesforce admin and tell them that Marketo is telling you that the record was updated by Salesforce. They, however, reply back to you and share a screenshot of the Salesforce record with the record history, and Salesforce is telling them that the record update was attributed to "Marketo Sync" (let's assume that this is the name of your sync profile).   Who's right?  Technically, you both are but you need some more information to help you have this conversation with your

Hey all - I posted this to LinkedIn today and got an encouraging note to post here as well (thanks, Jonathan!) Over the years, I've implemented a lot of Marketo instances. By the 15th time you do something, it ought to be pretty good – and I'm really proud of the systems we've built at my current company. Both in part to keep my memory fresh on why/how some things work and to look for opportunities to improve our systems, I've been doing some documentation/clean-up in my spare time. Most recently I took some screenshots & notes of our Lead Source/Lead Source Detail program. While something like this is ENTIRELY unnecessary if you have something like Bizible (aka Bizzy aka Marketo Measure aka so fetch), it's a good case in point for why documentation should be considered part of the build process. Anyway, hope you find this useful. Lead Source & Lead Source Detail Setup Guide

A long way back, you learned that direct links to static assets (like, say, a PDF) won’t be tracked by Munchkin. You should instead have a central Redirector LP that hooks up the Munchkin cookie before flipping to the target asset.   Later, I showed how to instrument Munchkin so an event fires as soon as Visit Web Page has been logged, allowing the fastest response for Munchkin-dependent stuff — like redirecting.   Hadn’t yet wrapped together those 2 concepts, though. So here’s how you should set up the Redirector LP in the modern age (as of late 2024).   First, download the HitEvent JS and re-upload it to your Design Studio: teknkl-munchkinhitevent-v1.js   Load that file in the <head> of your Redirector LP: <!-- Munchkin event enabler --> <script src="https://pages.example.com/rs/123-ABC-456/teknkl-munchkinhitevent-v1.js"></script> <!-- /Munchkin event enabler -->   It’s critical that it load before the Munchkin library, which g

Marketo Munchkin and Google Analytics have a lot in common on the client side, but GA’s event_callback feature is something Munchkin ain’t got.   event_callback lets you trigger a JS action as soon as possible after Google fires an event: not one millisecond before, and not some gross-grained period after, but exactly at the right time.   When you’re redirecting away from a page, event_callback ensures the event shows up in GA. Rather than guessing “GA usually takes less than 2 seconds” — or worse, not even thinking about GA’s network needs at all — you do this: gtag("event", "page_view", { "event_callback": function() { document.location.href = "/followup-page.html"; } });   Similarly, it would be great to know when Munchkin has sent the Visit Web Page. To do that, we need an event or callback that fires at that exact moment. No guesswork.   The goal Instrumenting an existing library that only exists as minimized JS is a pretty foolish thing in general. &

"Marketo only" custom objects have been available for a while within Marketo, but up until recently you needed involvement from Support or Consulting to create them. Well, all that is changing in a recent enhancement to Marketo. If you need to leverage Custom Objects, you can request access via support, and this new end user facing UI is all yours. Amazing, Right? Once enabled, you'll see the Custom Objects under Admin --> Custom ObjectsLets talk a bit about why you might need or want to use custom objects. Custom objects are used to extend the Marketo data model and specify data that exists in a one to many relationship with a Lead or Company. Example of this might be "Products" or "Contracts" or "Investment Portfolios".. the possibilities are endless. These objects, one created and published are populated using the SOAP or REST API and can be used in Smart Campaigns or Smart lists, and are viewable in the Lead Details screen under "Custom Objects"The available Triggers and Filters

Email deliverability refers to the ability of an email message to reach the intended recipient’s inbox, or the rate of successful deliverability in which the recipient does not report the email as spam or unsubscribe. This post will walk through five steps you can follow to understand and improve your email deliverability.  Please comment below if you have any questions regarding managing your email deliverability with Marketo!   Step 1: Understand the Basics  Review the following resources to learn the fundamentals of Email Deliverability.   Learn about optimizing email deliverability (Video, 8 min): Short video demo on how to create interesting content, avoid being sent to spam, and better engage your customers.  Deliverability (Webinar, 58 min): Marketo’s deliverability expert explains components of sender reputation and how to manage your reputation.  Marketo Email Deliverability FAQ (Blog, 13 min read): We've partnered with our experts to an

The removal of Reflection-based features from Marketo’s Velocity environment in June 2019 was a disappointment — however inevitable — to those of us who push email scripting to the limit.   Requirements like encoding, hashing, encryption, flexible rounding and randomization, XPath queries, and advanced filters/sorts on Custom Objects could no longer be met with Marketo alone. (Webhooks can fulfill a subset of those needs, but with nowhere near the performance and simplicity of Velocity.)   At the prodding of Community user @TM, I set out to see if Base64 encoding, one of the Java methods that used to be callable from Velocity, could be written with “pure” Velocity and public Java methods, without relying on the Reflection API.   I was indeed able to do it... though unlike most of my Velocity work, this one wouldn’t File Under Fun!   You can call the #userlandBase64_v3 macro below in 4 ways:   #1: Basic usage #userlandBase64_v3("some string")‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍

Have you ever tried to set up a Marketo Google Sheets Integration but have been frustrated by the need to use a 3rd party middleman like Zapier? Well, today I am going to show you a very cool and easy way that you can send Marketo data directly to a Google Sheet using a webhook and all in under 15 minutes!     Preparing Your Google Sheet   Creating Google Sheet to store Marketo Data   The first thing we are going to do is create the Google sheet where we want to log our Marketo data. In this example our sheet is going to contain 6 columns for each person who registers for our webinar:   The timestamp that the webhook was sent from Marketo A hyperlink to the lead profile The person's first name The person's last name The person's company The person's email   Sample Google Sheet to log Marketo Data   Creating Google Apps Script to Catch Marketo Webhook   Next, we are going to go to Extensions > Apps Script and paste the code below

One of the first things you will discover when you start working In Marketo Engage is how much your success in delivering on your revenue goals depends on your shared processes with your CRM.  If you’re like me, and many other Marketo Engage experts, that CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system is Salesforce.  This is for good reason.  Marketo Engage was originally developed with Salesforce Sales Cloud integration at the core of its operations and this is an incredible advantage over other marketing automation tools.   Salesforce and Marketo may be considered rival solutions in your organization.  Marketo Engage is mostly owned and managed by Marketing and Salesforce is owned and managed by IT or Sales Operations.  Salesforce is based on a relational database structure (Leads, Accounts, Contacts, and Opportunities as the core “objects” as they are called in Salesforce-speak) and Marketo Engage uses a more denormalized “Person” record for co

You asked, we listened! We've heard many deliverability related questions from the community so we've partnered with our deliverability team to put together an FAQ below to address the most burning topics. Please comment below if your questions are not answered here or if you have additional questions!     What is Apple’s Mail Privacy Protection (MPP) policy change and how does it impact Marketo users? In short, Apple’s MPP allows Apple device email recipients to opt in to MPP in order to anonymize their email open activity from being tracked. Note this change impacts the entire email marketing industry, not just Marketo users, as the new policy prevents email open activities tracking on Apple device email recipients (provided the user takes the action to anonymize their email open activities). Due to this change, the best practice is to focus on click-based activity as your primary engagement metrics with your email program and re-evaluate existing automations/workflows (i.

I cannot express the number of times I’ve spoken with other Marketo users who are interested in getting started with using Velocity Script tokens, but they have no idea where to start. The truth is, it IS hard to get started, but only because there aren’t a ton of resources that help paint the broad picture for what Velocity is, how it works, and why it might make sense to use. Hopefully this piece can start to fill that gap.   Overview Introduction to Velocity When to Use Velocity Script Tokens Tools of the Trade & Best Practices Creating & Testing Tokens Introduction to Velocity: What is Velocity Scripting? Velocity is a coding language built on Java used for scripting content. With it, you can create powerful personalization in your email assets, resulting in more customized experiences for your prospects and customers.   As we get started here, I want to state upfront that Velocity can be… a bit of a rabbit hole. But we don’t need to go down it right now. Develo

Welcome to the Marketo Success Series! In this series, we partner with Marketo Champions and Champion Alumni to fully explore how some of our most celebrated Marketo experts are using Marketo to drive success. In this edition, Marketo Champions @jenn_dimaria2 and @maarten_westdo2  teamed up to create a full deep-dive into how they are leveraging Programs.   What Are Programs?   Marketo defines Programs as a single marketing initiative and the container for local assets (like forms, landing pages, etc); however, they’re more than the glue that keeps everything together. They also tie marketing activities to revenue and give quick insights into what’s performing (or maybe more importantly: what’s not).   Why Do You Need It?   “However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.”   The simplest reason? Reporting. But organization is a big deal, too. Back in the day, Marketo didn’t have Programs. Long-term users pro

Marketo released Self-Service Flow Steps (SSFS) last summer and I’ve been shocked that more people haven’t been talking about it.  I’ve been working with Marketo over a decade, and for me this is an absolute game changer.  I have spent the past year building dozens of custom flow steps, and I’ve been amazed with the things we’re able to do that were previously impossible. The biggest challenge I’ve had is the lack of information available.  While Adobe has done a great job with the documentation, there doesn’t seem to be many people in the community using this feature, or at least none writing about it.  That is why I want to share my experience. Primarily, what Self Service Flow Steps are, and how they solve 5 major limitations of webhooks.    First, what are Self-Service Flow Steps?   In Marketo, smart campaigns are where all of the action happens. You are probably familiar with the standard list of flow actions.  And, if you’ve used Marketo fo

Conversational Flows are a powerful tool that can be used to improve your customer experience and achieve your business goals. Here are a few use cases:   Qualify leads: You can use Conversational Flows to ask visitors questions about their needs and interests. This information can then be used to qualify leads and route them to the appropriate sales representative. For example, you could create a Conversational Flow that asks visitors if they are interested in learning more about a specific product or service. If the visitor says yes, the Conversational Flow can then ask them additional questions to qualify their lead status. Provide customer support: Conversational Flows can also be used to provide customer support. For example, you could create a Conversational Flow that answers common questions about your products or services, or that helps customers troubleshoot problems. You could also use Conversational Flows to collect feedback from customers. Upsell and cross-s
