Tokens Used By - beware!

So, we can see now if and where a token is in use. That’s great!
 

 

But looking at it a little more, I was wondering why so many of my Program Tokens were not in use. And in fact: They are in use, but obviously in a way that Marketo doesn’t recognize. I’d tentatively say this:

 

“Used by” is only recorded when the token is in the body of an email or in a rich text area on a landing page. It is not recorded if the token is in a Smart Campaign Flow Step, in the meta tags on a landing page or in the local variables of an email module.

 

That is probably not the extensive list, but be careful when deleting local tokens that are indicated to not be in use. It might be misleading.

      Yeah, I was wondering the same and realized this while reviewing scoring tokens, which are used only in campaigns (no LP/Email). Thanks for sharing!

       

      Aside from this, I also realized that for tokens that are used/referenced in a significant number of places (emails/LPs), the Used By just shows 50+, even though the actual reference may be fewer than 50. Example: in the first image below, both tokens are used at 27 places, but their Used By shows 50+, and the year token is used in 40 places, but its Used By also shows 50+. I don't know what the minimum number of references is for Used By to say 50+; logically, it should be 50, but it doesn't seem to be. This might be a bug in my instance only, or I might be missing something on my end, but let me know if you're seeing it too. Thank you!

       

      Example: the following 2 tokens are used at 27 places, but Used By says 50+
