Hello Erin and my fellow aspirants. I am Sadhana Ravuri working as an Email Marketing Executive at KPMK UK. I am based out of London since 2022 and belong to India. I started my career with Amazon in 2017 as a support associate and paved my way into the field of Marketing Automation technology. Over a course of time, I have developed a deep passion for this domain as I saw myself leveraging my skills to the optimum level be it technical, innovative or communication skills. I chose Marketo in particular because of its robust UI and functionality, especially the ease with which the campaigns can be created. So the question for me is "why not Marketo?!". Besides my passion, I am an extrovert who loves making like minded network and the way I see it, there is no better way than learning together. And thats why, this programme! 🙂 I am so excited to meet you all and learn from you; also help you in my remit to achieve the goals we have. Lets do this.

Hello fellow mentees (and Mentor, Erin!),
My name is Geoffrey Landrum and I work for an FI in central Illinois. I've been using Marketo for about a year now, but only for email sends. I am hoping to learn more about nurture programs, drip campaigns, and analytics. I've learned a lot through the Marketo Community and MUG and am available to help, if I can.
Looking forward to collaborating with you all!

Have a good weekend!

Hello, fellow group of aspirants!
I decided to take the Marketo Engage Professional Practice Exam without studying to gauge my understanding of Marketo Engage. I was pretty surprised that I knew as much as I did!

Nice work, @laevinsdad.  That's a great idea - taking the test to give you a baseline of where you are in your overall development.

I'll try to do the same and we can gauge how we are doing.

Hello to all.

I'm Jeff Hensiek and I work at an FI in the greater Denver, Co area (@laevinsdad - you and I may have a lot in common 😉).

Here's a little about me:

My hobbies are golf, fly fishing, and building things.  What do these three things have in common?  They are all very intricate, detailed, and minor things can make a huge difference.  And, that is one of the main reasons that my career has gravitated to marketing automation - it's intricate, creative, detailed, and I get to build some cool stuff.

My background:

A good chunk of my career has been in the digital marketing space - mostly in franchising.  I've spent time both at the franchisor level (8 years at the corporate office) and also as a vendor (8 years running a digital marketing agency).

For the last 2.3 years, I've been working at a FI, and one of the main things that attracted me to my current company was their use of Marketo (and that I get to learn Power Automate and play with Power BI).  While I have experience with KEAP (F.K.A. Infusionsoft) and HubSpot, I had always wanted to learn Marketo.  Which is why I'm very excited that I've been able to expand my knowledge over the past few years while on the platform.  However, I also recognize that I have a lot of room to grow.  My team and I have a pretty good handle on the basics and we're looking to build out some really cool things as well - so, all ideas are welcome... the more creative the better.

I look forward to connecting with you all and learning more about Marketo.

Thanks

Jeff Hensiek

Afternoon, fellow group of aspirants!

I followed in Geoffrey's (@laevinsdad ) footsteps and took the practice exam.  I'm pretty stoked at the results.

If you haven't taken a practice exam yet, please give it a shot.  It was enlightening and eye opening.

Now, I'm looking forward to spending some time in the study materials.

Great question @sadhanara .  I found it difficult to find where were the practice exams.  So, I've put in some screen shots that - I hope - may be able to help you find this too.

And, there are probably multiple ways to find this area... so, it's possible that someone else has a different path to take.  🙂

This first picture is from the first post in this thread... our welcome to the mentor program.

General question for the group.

We're looking to track product sales in a 'rolling' fashion (e.g., rolling 30 days), and we're having difficulty with it.  This is a little involved... so, here are some relevant details:

Our instance of Marketo doesn't have a CRM

We have a custom object and all of our product purchases are in the custom object - lumped together (they are separated, but when querying, we are querying the entire object and not just a single new product that was purchased).

We're trying to track the overall success of our onboarding campaigns as they relate to upselling products. For example:  Member/Custom:

  • Buys product on January 1
  • Receives welcome email on January 2 (our instance of Mkto is populated with a nightly push of data - through an API - from our Business Intelligence Team).
  • Auto enrolled into a nurture series (1 email per week)
  • Purchases additional product on January 15

Our question is how to track this in an ongoing manner.  Because, Member #2 would have entered the same process starting on January 2 after making their purchase (welcome email on Jan 3).

One option - a very manual option - is to create a smart campaign and adjust it daily (ugh).  Filters include:

  • Received email on January 2
  • Purchased product between January 3 and Feb 3 (a 30 day window).

This flow could be manually adjusted each day for a new 30-day window.

However, I'm looking to have this more automated so that I don't have to adjust it daily.

Thoughts from the group???

Hey @jeffhensiek

This is just a fair shot from me!

I am thinking of a combination of a trigger campaign and an engagement programme with the below logic:

Engagement program:

I would set a stream cadence that the person should receive a monthly email on the 30th day and set the communication limit to 1; stop the email send once the limit is exhausted.

Trigger campaign:

Smart list: Person made a purchase

Flow: add to the above engagement programme.

I am conscious that the engagement programme might not serve the automatic 30 day email trigger. For example, I might not be receiving the email exactly on 3rd July if I make a purchase today, however, I feel this combination could work. Would love to know the solution your team is implementing. 🙂

Thanks for the suggestion... I do like the idea of creating a trigger campaign... that's a good thought.  I'll have to see if I can play around with that logic a little.

A quick additional piece of clarity for everyone... This is an onboarding email series.  The members would need to get an email based on the day that they make a purchase (e.g., the day after they make a purchase).  While I like the Stream idea... my hurdle there (at lest, how we've implemented Streams in the past) is that we trigger a cast based on a particular day of the week (e.g., Tuesday).  Is there a way to make a stream more dynamic (e.g., a cast on a particular cadence?  e.g., send email on day 1 - wait 3 days - send email - wait 7 days - send email - wait 19 days - send email wait 31 days, etc.)?

Hello team,

I am unable to understand the Head start concept on Marketo as I am confused with the time zones.

Could someone please explain me with an example of London, UK time for me to be able to relate?

Good morning fellow Marketo learners.

Here's a topic for discussion...

I was working on my Morning Routine today and happen to come across this... just thought it was interesting and wanted to share (And, possibly start a little conversation, too  😉).

Inside of Marketing Activities - there's a section called "Campaign Inspector".  It shows you which campaigns are currently running (both batch and trigger).  What I found interesting today was a new icon that popped up.  Over this past week, we've been doing a little cleanup and we've been archiving many of our older campaigns (from many years ago).  Based on a little research, it shows that this is an icon to identify whether a campaign is in the Archive folder or not (See image below).

It appears that we have trigger campaigns that are still running from old campaign.

So, my next step was to jump in and turn off these old campaigns.

However, I thought this may be an interesting question for the group - is there any reason to keep them on?

Thanks for sharing this, Jeff! I haven't come across Campaign Inspector before. This seems really helpful for doing clean up or when taking over a new instance that you're not familiar with.

I can't think of a reason to keep them on (depending on the age), but I'm interested to hear others thoughts.

JeffHensiek
Level 4
June 14, 2024

yes, agreed... those were my thoughts as well.

The only reason I could potentially see in keeping them is if we archived projects very quickly (e.g., day after the campaign ended) and then still wanted to track opens/clicks/etc.  However, if that were the case, I'd make the argument that the campaign is still 'in-flight' and should be still "Active".  Once the reporting phase is over, then I could see moving them to Archive.

Question to the group.

We're building out some custom 'signatures' for our sales team and I have a question regarding the formatting of the custom fields.

I'm getting stuck on two field... the name, and the URL (the appointment scheduling URL - e.g., Calendly, and their specific landing page.)

My question is this... how would you format the fields?

For the Name (first and last - joined together - e.g., 'Jeff Hensiek'), I currently have it as a String - Not sure that's the best.  it renders well in the HTML version of the email, however, when I populate the value in the TEXT version of the email, it puts the HTML for a space in there (e.g., Jeff Hensiek).  So, I'm thinking I may have to switch it to a "Text Area".

How would you go about formatting the URL field?

What would be the pros/cons of the URL being a "URL" field type vs, a "STRING" field type?

I can provide more detail if you'd like... just thought I'd start the conversation with this short question.

Thoughts?

OK - crew...

Here's where we're going with this question ("URL" field type vs, a "STRING" field type) and our logic behind this option.

For the "Name" field, we're going to be switching over to a "Text" field.  The STRING field is changing the space between the first and last names to some HTML code (e.g., ' ' - resulting in "Jeff Hensiek").  Our hope is that moving to the "TEXT" field will allow us to adopt/keep the space in the name field.

Regarding the URL... our initial tests have not really shown much difference between the URL and the STRING.

Therefore, I'm going to be putting this into a STRING format.  Why not a URL format?  That's goes into how our company is configured overall.  We have a platform called CloudFlare that is used as an added layer of protection.  In our experience, it has a tendency to append characters to a URL when it is delivered.  While the URL still fires as intended, the Text version of the URL comes across in an ugly manner.  Therefore, we're looking to use the STRIG format to help overcome this with our emails.

Regardless of the STRING format, we're still able to embed this URL (through the use of a Dynamic Snippet and Segmentation*) into the code of the HTML email and also as text in the text version of the emails.  So, our end result, doesn't appear to have been changed at all.

Anyway, that's what we're doing (at least for now 😉 - until someone points out the differences that I have missed).

*Dynamic Snippet and Segmentation - if you'd like to hear how we've created ours... feel free to ask... I've left that portion out of this post for brevity.  😂

Recent update on the String/text field for the name.

On Friday, I did a rebuild of the signature functionality and used the "Text Field" in place of the "String" for the Sales Reps name.

During testing, the same issue developed (e.g., the sales reps name is coming up as "Jeff Hensiek" - instead of "Jeff Hensiek").

So, Now, I'm thinking that I should have split out the data into First, Last fields.  I went the other direction initially because the data source keeps them together, however, now, I think I'll have to parse them out and build out separate fields - one for first name and one for last name.

The saga continues!!
