Is there a max amount on custom variables?

Simple Q: is there a max amount of custom variables e.g. before system gets slow etc.

No, not particularly. Having additonal custom fields does have some small overhead although really only if there is data in those fields. In general, if you need a field, make it and don't worry too much about it. However, I would avoid strategies that involved making hundreds of them.

I woudl agree with Erik.  If you add too many fields, they can be hard to manage and can be annoying to people working within your marketo instance.  You can go back and archive fields, which is nice, but I would think through all of the fields you really need.
