How do you handle employee's that get into Marketo/CRM as leads?

I'm curious what other Marketo companies do to handle employees in their databases. We have 400+ employees that register for events, download resources, visit the website, etc. Do you have them designated somehow in Marketo or in CRM so they dont clutter lead reports and metrics? We use Salesforce.

Thanks guys!

I really like Val's suggestion.

In the past I have also just put in all my employees as contacts with the type "employee" against an account for my company and encouraged employees to always use their work email to sign up for things so I can dedupe them against their existing record. That way not only can I use the contact type field to filter them out of outbound campaigns, but I can also use Marketo's abilities in my favour and get an overview of what my employees are downloading, registering for etc and treating them like another target group.

Keeping your employee list in the system also allows you to run your internal comms from inside Marketo and track opens, clicks etc like any other communication. It can be very useful to track the effectiveness of your internal comms.

Hello Mary -

I have created a batch and a smart campaign that looks for email addresses with our company email domain.  When our company email address comes into that campaign, we have a custom field called "suppression" and tag them as employees.  This way, when creating emails blasts or running reports in your CRM or Marketo, we can filter them out.  Though this doesn't catch employees who have used their gmail or a person email, it catches the majority of them.

A simpler way to manage employee data is to run smart lists with the variations and names:

Company Name CONTAINS
Email Address CONTAINS @yourcompany.com
Names if necessary

I then add them as a supressed list or as a seed list.

And you can definitely run staff communications from Marketo as Veronica says.
