What would be the use-case for dataset expiration? For example if we upload external audiences and we no more needed that data?

Dataset expiration in Adobe Experience Platform serves several important use-cases that are essential for data governance and privacy compliance. Here are the key use-cases for dataset expiration:

  1. Data Hygiene and Compliance:

    • Dataset expiration allows organizations to enforce data hygiene practices by automatically removing datasets that are no longer needed. This helps in reducing data clutter and maintaining a clean and organized data environment.
    • From a compliance perspective, dataset expiration ensures that data is not retained longer than necessary, aligning with privacy regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, and others. By setting expiration dates, organizations can demonstrate their commitment to data privacy and compliance.12
  2. Lifecycle Management:

    • Dataset expiration supports lifecycle management by automating the removal of outdated datasets. This is particularly useful for managing historical data, temporary datasets, or data that has a defined retention period.
    • It enables organizations to efficiently manage the lifecycle of data assets, preventing the accumulation of obsolete or redundant datasets over time.1
  3. Segmentation and Audience Accuracy:

    • Dataset expiration plays a crucial role in maintaining the accuracy of audience segmentation. By aligning dataset expiration with the lookback windows for audiences, organizations can ensure that segmentation results remain accurate and relevant.
    • For example, if an audience has a lookback window of 30 days, datasets with an expiration value of 30 days can help in producing accurate audience segments.3
  4. Data Governance and Security:

    • Dataset expiration supports robust data governance practices by providing a mechanism to automatically delete datasets after a specified period. This helps in mitigating the risk of unauthorized access to outdated data and reduces the potential impact of data breaches.
    • It also contributes to overall data security by minimizing the exposure of sensitive or confidential information beyond its required retention period.

In summary, dataset expiration in Adobe Experience Platform is instrumental in promoting data hygiene, ensuring compliance with privacy regulations, managing data lifecycles, maintaining segmentation accuracy, and strengthening data governance and security practices.1

Hi @michael_soprano

Just to confirm are you looking for dataSet expiration via setting a time-to-live (TTL)?

This video covers the dataset expiration feature in the Data Lifecycle section of the left navigation, if that is what you are referring to: https://experienceleague.adobe.com/en/docs/platform-learn/tutorials/data-lifecycle/expire-datasets?lang=en
