CQ 5.5.SP3 Patch Installation Triggered during a scheduled Restarting of CQ Instance

We have CQ 5.5 and already installed SP3 a couple of months ago. Last weekend, another SP3 update was triggered and the error.log did not give information on why it was triggered. Can you please give your thoughts on why it was triggered and a better understanding on how we can prevent that from happening again.
As a result of the automatic upgrade, it took longer than usual for the instance to be up and thus provided false indication that the instance was down. An engineer responded and stopped the instance while doing the upgrade thus I think we lost some replication configurations and also the CQ client library cannot be found thus displaying blank screens if you select an option in the Site admin tools - (Websites, Digital Assets, Inbox, etc).
