RTE Maxlength is not working in AEM 6.5 any alternative to this

Hello,

I have been trying to add Max length validation to the rte field, i am able to display error label and disable the save option but the border red is not persisting, when i click outside the field the OOTB validation is working and only the border red is getting replaced with blue border. How to solve this.
