IMO, special characters are pretty big red flags for spam filters altogether.

If you really feel like you need special characters in your subject line and want real results, do some A/B testing.

You know I don't have any metrics on this but we often use "," and ":" and "-" in our email subject lines. I will add this to my list of things to investigate in our email metrics.

I will be putting together a much longer post on this soon, but preliminary results from our May promotional email analysis indicate not much of a difference in the subject lines:

  • We sent half of our promotional emails in May with characters in the subject line
  • Opens were slightly higher and clicks slightly lower
  • If the subject was a question, the opens were noticeably higher
  • Deliverability was slightly better with characters in the subject (88.9% without vs 90.2% with)
