Manager's Manager Wildcard Reporting

Has anyone been able to successfully create a wildcard report that filters on Manager's Manager (one over manager)? For example we want to pull timesheets that are open/incomplete for a manager's direct reports as well as their 2nd level of direct reports. At the moment you can make the report without using text mode to pull the 1st level of direct reports but no matter what me and @Jill Blum try we cannot get that 2nd level.
