Using Segmentations for Exclusion Lists

Issue

If your Smart Lists are processing slowly, you may be able to speed them up using Segmentations for exclusion lists.

Solution

Many companies maintain email exclusion lists based on a number of criteria. In Marketo, these are often set up using Smart Lists that are then referenced in "Member of Smart List" filters. However, Smart Lists that reference other Smart Lists can be slow to resolve. Using a Segmentation for your exclusion lists instead of Smart Lists can help your campaigns and programs run more efficiently.

Instructions for setting up Segmentations can be found here: Create a Segmentatio

You can then use the Segmentation filters in your Smart List rather than the "Member of Smart List" filters: Use Segment Filters in a Smart List.

Hi Roxanne

Indeed. This is exactly what we are implementing so system performance is not impacted as much as using smartlist to pull an audience for campaign execution.

Thanks

I'm not seeing any attached documents to this post. Is there supposed to be one?

Can someone supply step by step directions for creating and using a segment as an exclusion list for mailings using the following fields:

  1. Unsubscribed = True
  2. Email Invalid = True
  3. Marketing Suspended = True
  4. Blacklisted = True
  5. Email Address is empty
  6. Email suspended at in past 24 hours

(Reference Product Docs: Blocked records from mailings: https://nation.marketo.com/docs/DOC-1846)

I'd like to ensure that we're setting it up using best practices.

Thanks in advance for your help! @Roxann McGlumphy‌ @Michelle Malkasian‌ @Axel Baran‌

Hello Jennifer,

The instructions for creating a segmentation is linked above. You would create one with exactly the filters you specified. Could you tell me what part of this you need clarified? I would be happy to amend the document to add any necessary information.
