SFDC Contact sync fails with error "INSUFFICIENT_ACCESS_OR_READONLY: insufficient access rights on object id"

Issue Description

You have a record in Marketo that is a Contact in SFDC, and the record fails to sync with the error "INSUFFICIENT_ACCESS_OR_READONLY: insufficient access rights on object id."

Issue Resolution

This error can occur if the Record Type ID field is not updated in Marketo when the SFDC Lead is converted to a Contact.  If the Record Type ID value displayed in Marketo is not valid for Contacts, the sync will fail with the error, "INSUFFICIENT_ACCESS_OR_READONLY: insufficient access rights on object id."

To resolve this, you can update the Record Type ID in Marketo with the correct value from Salesforce, or you can delete the value from Marketo and allow the sync to write the correct value from Salesforce.

I get this error frequently, and sometimes when the Person is only a Lead in SFDC.

Why does the Record Type ID field not get updated in Marketo when the SFDC lead is converted to a contact?

Hi Krista,

There are several different possible causes for this error.  This article only deals with one of them, the Record Type ID mismatch.  The Record Type ID field could fail to update because at some point during the conversion process, Marketo loses visibility to the field in SFDC.  So if you are experiencing this issue, your SFDC Admin would need to determine why the Marketo sync user was not able to see the value change.

Is it possible to remove the Record Type ID on a large group of leads? I have approximately 17,000 leads that I need to update.

I believe you can set up a Smart Campaign with a Change Data Value flow step to write a "null" value to the field in Marketo.

I'm not able to edit the Record Type in Marketo. Is this standard?

Hello Simon,

If you are unable to clear the value for Record Type ID on a Contact record, please reach out to Marketo support for assistance.
