Difference between the Acquisition Program and Acquisition Program Name

Could you explain this further? We just stood up a new Marketo instance. I need to go back and add Acquisition Program information to existing records. I was able to successfully update the Acquisition Date, but got this odd error of "no new value supplied in campaign" when attempting to populate Acquisition Program via Change Data Value even though there is no value in Acquisition Program Name.

How can I achieve populating Acquisition Program on existing records?

Hi Bonnie,

The "Acquisition Program" field is system managed, which means you cannot update it.  That field is only populated when a new name enters the system as a program member. If it enters the system in any other way and is then given membership in a program, the field will not be populated.  

• A person fills out a form on a landing page in the program.
  • Person will automatically have the first status in the progression and will have a value set in the "Acquisition Program" field.
• You import members into the program from a CSV file.
  • Person will automatically have the first status in the progression. If the person on the list did not exist in Marketo prior to being imported into the program membership, then they will have a value set for the "Acquistion Program" field.
• A person is created using the Marketo iPad check-in application. If the person on the list did not exist in Marketo prior to being created with the check-in app, then they will have a value set for the "Acquistion Program" field.

For all other leads, you would use the field "Acquisiton Program Name", which is a field you can update manually or with a Change Data Value flow step, to designate the program through which you acquired them.

I think I know where my issue lies. The original acquisition programs do not exist in the new Marketo instance, so when I attempt to update the value from NULL to a program name we don't have anymore, it won't accept it. Does that sound correct? What if I added a Marketo Program called "Legacy" and then created a new field called "Acquisition Program Historic?" Think that would work? Could I use a Mentoring Session to sort out something like this?

Just to clarify, which field are you trying to update? "Acquisition Program" or "Acquisiton Program Name?"  At any rate, if you make a custom field for old acquisition programs, you should be able to populate it with any value you want.

And, yep, I'm still around.  These days I'm trying to build up the knowledge base so you folks have resources outside of making a phone call or opening a case.

I'd like to update Acquisition Program Name. However, that doesn't appear to be a choice in a Change Data Value flow step. Only Acquisition Program. And most, if not all, of the programs don't exist in the new instance. Is there another way?
