UTM Dynamic Population for Values

Are we able to populate the text used in the call to actions as a value in the URLs for tracking?

{CTA Text} is "Schedule a Tour", having the url populate in "schedule_a_tour" for the UTM_Content=

so it would be utm_content=schedule_a_tour

Hi Jasbir,
You cannot us it directly to get that value. If you used it as a URL parameter it would include the spaces, which would result in utm_content=Schedule%20a%20Tour
If you wanted to define it int he email module, you would need to set a separate variable within the module scope where you could add the schedule_a_tour string value, similar to the current variable that you have defined for the button text..

Like Blane says the, URL-encoded form of Schedule a Tour is Schedule%20a%20Tour. The URL-encoding will not be done by Marketo but for the specific case of space ⮕ %20 that’s okay. So you can use that value as the utm_content.

BUT! That is not the case for all values of ${CTA Text}. Because Marketo will not URL-encode values for you, you must make sure the CTA text is always URL-safe. For example, the text Click & Go is not URL-safe because ampersands must be encoded as %26. In that case you’d end up with utm_content set to Click%20 (and another useless query param %20Go with no value).

So overall, even if you don’t expect any magical conversions from space to _ and so on, it’s not safe to use utm_content=${CTA Text} unless your text is closely managed to ensure the resulting URL would parse correctly.

Thank you for your reply @BlaneMcMichen-1 @sandy_logitech , Is it possible to achieve this using Velocity?

Only if the entire <a> through closing </a> is output from Velocity. So it’s sort of possible but you’d need significant changes to the template, e.g. the ${variables} for href and inner text would be stored and then re-output using VTL. It’d be a complex task.

Hi Jasbir,
No. An Email 2.0 module variable such as ${ctaText} is resolved in the email template at design time. A Velocity Email Script runs later, at send time, so it cannot read or assign the module variable into a Velocity value such as $ctaURLtext.
