Seeking folder structure recommendation

Hello! I am working on a new Marketo instance and creating our folder tree per Adobe’s recommendations.The issue I am running into is that our instance is split into partitions based off of the business area; as such, I’d like the same proposed folder example in each partition, but Marketo does not allow the same folder names. 

The only resolution I have currently is putting something like:
A - Active Marketing Programs [for the first instance]
and continuing with a letter in front like that for all folders.

 

Wondering if anyone else has encountered this issue and what they did to make names unique.

Hi ​@adiller,

 

This is a common challenge when setting up partitioned instances. The lettering approach works but can get messy fast, especially as you scale so here are a couple of cleaner alternatives worth considering.

 

Prefix with the Partition/Business Unit name

The simplest and most readable convention is to lead with the partition identifier rather than a generic letter:

  • EMEA - Active Marketing Programs
  • NAM - Active Marketing Programs
  • APAC - Active Marketing Programs

It immediately tells anyone navigating the instance which business area they're in, and it scales naturally as you add partitions. Much easier to maintain than A, B, C when someone new joins the team and has no idea what the letters map to.

If your partitions are split by Business Unit rather than region, the same logic applies, just swap the prefix to reflect that:

  • BU1 - Active Marketing Programs
  • BU2 - Active Marketing Programs

Works just as cleanly and keeps the structure consistent regardless of how your instance is divided, whether that's by geography, product line, or business unit.

Thanks, Peeyush! Yes, I intend to do our business unit acronyms, A/B/C was just an example here. Really unfortunate this is a common issue.

    Yes, it's one of those things that feels like it should have a more elegant native solution in Marketo but once you lock in a consistent prefix convention and document it early, it becomes second nature. Good luck with the build!
