Use this course discussion thread to ask any questions you might have and be sure to share it with your colleagues that are just getting started with Marketo Engage! Also, if you have any questions abo

Marketo’s ${variable} syntax conflicts with other languages using the same dollar-single-curly-quote syntax, like good ol’ JavaScript.   So if you try to use a JS template literal in the LP Editor... <script> let a = `Report ID ${report} for ${this.name}`; </script>   ... Marketo naturally thinks you’re referring to missing variables and throws an error:   Officially, there’s no alternate syntax in Marketo (and there’s definitely no way to change the delimiter in JS). But the workaround is easy. Create a global Text token {{my.d}} just containing the single character $:     (Why {{my.d}}? Just copying Velocity’s $esc.d, which also escapes the dollar sign. You could use another name if you want, but this should be easy to remember.)   Use that token to escape the $ sign: <script> let a = `Report ID {{my.d}}{report} for {{my.d}}{this.name}`; </script>   Marketo will render this as: <script> let a = `Report ID ${report}

Dropping new scripts and styles into a master LP template and mass-reapproving isn’t the safest route. JS might only be meant for certain forms… CSS might conflict with heavily customized pages (perhaps someone exploited the dreaded Custom Head HTML?)... trust me, stuff can go wrong.   Better to have a gentler rollout/rollback, with <script> and <link> tags toggled using a mktoBoolean.   We’ve seen people try to use HTML comments to do this, but since the open-comment <!-- and close-comment --> sequences differ, they’re impossible to control with a single variable. (There’s tricky markup that seems to work, but the resulting document is invalid HTML — unprofessional even if the browser lets it slide.)   Ideally, we’d have valid HTML, using standard attributes to make elements either enabled/active or disabled/inert. And we can!   A solution for <script> elements For <script&

Google Tag Manager has a JavaScript problem. Yep, that’s a strong claim.   Isn’t GTM designed to inject so-called “tags” — HTML fragments including <script> elements and perhaps related markup like <form> elements and <div> containers[1] — into your pages? How could it have a JS problem if it’s pretty much about JS?   OK, let me be fair: it only has a problem if you’re trying use recent JS. “Recent” as in syntax and keywords that were ubiquitous in, say, 2013. If you don’t mind coding like it’s 2008, you’re good.😛   See, the Custom HTML type tag supports local <script> blocks, but they’re only allowed to use ECMAScript 5 features.[2] For example, an attempt to use block-scoped variables — let or const — makes your workspace unpublishable:     I’m no longer religious about Internet Explorer support (through mid-2021, my

Marketo Measure already has documentation on revenue amounts but I find that a lot of people are still a bit confused as to what exactly is going on. This post seeks to break it down and help you understand if there's any action needed to make sure Marketo Measure is pulling from your preferred revenue field.    Out of the box, Marketo Measure will reference the Standard Amount field on the Opportunity Object in SFDC to perform its revenue calculations. If your organization uses the Standard Amount field in a way that makes sense for your attribution reporting, you're good to go! No further action is needed.    On the other hand, maybe your organization would prefer that Marketo Measure read from a custom field -- maybe something like TCV or ARR. You CAN do this, we just need to configure it in two places -- Salesforce and the Marketo Measure account.  If this is your situation, make sure you're following best practices for determining your custom amount field.

Welcome back to the Champion Spotlight series, where we speak with one of our current Marketo Engage Champions to learn more about their background, their favorite things to do in Marketo Engage, what they wanted to be when they grew up, and more! This time, we spoke with @amit_jain ,  who is an IT Specialist at Atlassian. Let's hear what Amit has to say!      What was your first job? I started my career as an intern at a Marketing Agency, in June 2012. During my tenure of 4 years in the agency, I learned about Marketing and Marketing Automation. I was leading a team of 5 consultants to support multiple Customers on the Marketing Automation and Database fronts.   How and when did you get started with Marketo Engage? What was your first role and initial reaction to the platform? During my initial days on the job, I used to work on a Marketing Automation tool developed in-house. It was in 2013 when I was first introduced to Marketo Engage and started su

Hello Marketo Engage community,   Here are the steps for writing a custom activity into a lead record in Marketo. I pieced together the documentation with the open source github library to get people started.   Prerequisites include you have downloaded Python 3 and above, you have an environment setup to write calls using your IDE of choice.   Resources for reference: Marketo rest endpoint documentation: https://developers.marketo.com/rest-api/endpoint-reference/lead-database-endpoint-reference/#!/Activities/addCustomActivityUsingPOST Marketo-rest-python open source library: https://github.com/jepcastelein/marketo-rest-python (Jep Castelein thank you)   Let's us begin,   First create the custom activity in your instance within the admin section. create your fields attached to the custom activity: perfect, now we have what we need in Marketo to write the activity to the lead record.   Now lets write some code:   The key values: Lead id: (Le

You want to print the date of the first Monday or first Friday — let’s call it “first 𝒀-day” — of the next month. That’s when you host a recurring event.   Possible? 100%. Without a bunch of Velocity under your belt? Um, 0%. 😜   As always, start with the standard includes from the seminal post on days and times in Velocity: #set( $defaultTimeZone = $date.getTimeZone().getTimeZone("America/New_York") ) #set( $defaultLocale = $date.getLocale() ) #set( $calNow = $date.getCalendar() ) #set( $ret = $calNow.setTimeZone($defaultTimeZone) ) #set( $calConst = $field.in($calNow) ) #set( $ISO8601DateOnly = "yyyy-MM-dd" ) #set( $ISO8601DateTime = "yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ss" ) #set( $ISO8601DateTimeWithSpace = "yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss" ) #set( $ISO8601DateTimeWithMillisUTC = "yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ss.SSS'Z'" ) #set( $ISO8601DateTimeWithMillisTZ = "yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ss.SSSZ" )   Now it’s time for the fun stuff. In terms of lines of code, it’s short. But it’s long on possible confusion

In the second installment of the Marketo Success Series, we're featuring Marketo Champion Alumni @ande_kempf4 ! In this series, we partner with Marketo Champions and Champion Alumni to fully explore how some of our most celebrated Marketo experts are using Marketo to drive success. In this edition, Ande Kempf is sharing her secret sauce to driving results with Marketo Engage's Person Source feature.   Note: Marketo changed lead source to Person Source in April of 2017. So, if you see the term lead source floating around in Community, it’s synonymous with Person Source. For consistency in this chapter, I’m going to use the term Person Source.    Very simply, Person Source is a data field that is collected in Marketo meant to collect information on where the lead originated.  Another way to think about person source is the marketing tactic or channel used to collect a lead. For example, if a lead visits your organization’s booth at a tradeshow, then their source

When using webhook connections with Marketo, you will often come across an API connection with a two-step process. The first connection needs to send the authentication information, after which you get back an access token, and then that token needs to be provided in the second (and any other subsequent) queries to provide the necessary authentication. Both the Marketo and SFDC REST APIs follow this model. Marketo's Webhook functionality, though, is only a one-step process, so it's necessary to employ separate Webhook configurations to get this to work.   The first step is to create a new custom field on the Person object to hold the access token value. This field will hold the temporary, generated access token value between webhook connections.   Next step is to create a Webhook just to do the initial authentication step. It will save the returned token value in the Access Token field. Here is an example that connects to SFDC:   The last step is to create the Webhook

Today (August 28, 2023) I noticed borders on my buttons stopped rendering in Office365 on MacOS 12 and MacOS 13.  They were working fine everywhere else.  It appears be related to Microsoft's last update to Office365 Outlook for MacOS on August 22, 2023.    It's not a completely generalised issue however.  The use case is pretty specific.   This is a situation where I use a drop down to select colors.  Rather than visible color codes, I use my trick of putting a CSS comment in front of the attribute to give a human readable value to select (i.e as follows). When selected, the actual value is  /* VE Blue */ #17468F   The unrendered CSS looks like this:   border:2px solid ${ctaBorderColor};   which then renders to:   border:2px solid /* VE Blue */ #17468F;     This works on all other platforms, and has just stopped working in Office 365 on MacOS 12 and MacOS 13.  Fortunately, the fix was simple.

In which I again face down my nemesis: Microsoft Excel, the business software equivalent of classical music outside 7-Eleven.   Admin » Field Management » Used By supports XLS export when there are too many Used By items to display and/or when you need the data offline for cleanup projects. Alas, the exported files have a frustrating format.   They include a hyperlink to each Smart Campaign/Smart List, but that only works when you click the link within Excel:   If you need the underlying IDs in a text file to import into a database, Save As-ing CSV or TXT won’t work. Excel ignores the hyperlink and keeps only the visible text in the cell, like keeping the text of an <a> tag, not the href.   (Guess this makes some sense as it needs to keep either the text or the link, not both. Otherwise, you’d get a CSV with more columns than the original XLS, which would be unexpected.)   In any case, we want something

Love seeing surprising-but-correct behavior in the wild, ’stead of just proving in the lab that it could happen.   Today, a client finally asked “Why doesn’t this person show up when we search Marketo?” and the explanation was in this post I started years ago. It felt too theoretical back then, but now it’s coming out of Drafts.   They have a record like this in their database, First Name Étienne and Last Name Chateliez:   And yet filtering on what seem to be those same values:   Brings up the surprising:   And no, this isn’t about Smart List caching. It’s about something way more interesting.   The most common Latin-1 accented characters have two forms What’s the length, in characters, of the following value, including spaces? Tony! Toni! Toné!   You’re thinking 17. Now, how about this one? Tony! Toni! Toné!   You’re thinking 17 again, but you also want to say Is this a trick question? &nbs

Note: Kudos to those who have reviewed and given me feedback on this list! @Juli James @Jenn DiMaria @Christina ZunigaOverviewThe job of a Marketo administrator can be difficult to define. What are the primary responsibilities? What role should you play? Who should you work with?Depending on the size of the company, the charter will vary based on the number of users, resources, and volume of campaigns and content. In a smaller organization, the Marketo admin may perform all of the responsibilities described in this post, while in larger organizations he/she will oversee and delegate responsibilities to individuals or teams. The following will cover the core areas that the Marketo admin should focus on to be effective.Sync with CRM The Marketo admin works alongside sales operations to ensure marketing and sales data are syncing between Marketo and the CRM.  This includes determining field mapping (which fields in Marketo sync to which fields in the CRM) and ensuring the right fi

This post will walk through five steps to optimize and get value out of reporting with Marketo’s Performance Insights Dashboard.   STEP 1: Review & follow these Best Practices to optimize your programs for Reporting in Marketo. STEP 2: Create a Program Performance report. Ensure the programs you wish to report on are included in this Program Performance report. Review the report to confirm if “Success” and “New Name” columns are populated with data. Note that only programs with “Success” or “New Name” data will be reported in the MPI dashboard. Ideally, you want to see all columns populated with data to ensure optimized attribution reporting.   STEP 3: Create a Smart List “Has Opportunity” (use filter: “Has opportunity = true”). This will give you the list of people that are tied to opportunities (i.e. has contact role on the opportunity) that will contribute to the Pipeline/Revenue attribution dashboard based on explicit attribution setting. If your Smart List returns

This post explains best practices for getting the most out of Marketo Engage program & attribution reporting.   Most of Marketo’s out of the box attribution reporting (including Performance Insight and RCA) is based on “programs” in Marketo. To get value from Performance Insight dashboard/RCE and accurate attribution reporting, it is important to understand how Marketo measures your program performance to make sure you’re providing the necessary data for the dashboard to work.   Best Practice #1: ONE marketing activity = ONE program in Marketo Marketo’s best practice is to leverage its native “program” functionality to organize each of your marketing activities. For example, if you are planning a webinar, it is advisable to set up a webinar program in Marketo using the Event Program type and organize all relevant activities for this event (such as sending invitations, registration form process, reminder emails, etc.) as separate smart campaigns within the same Program. As COVID-19 spreads among our communities, and more of us find ourselves working from home for the first time, managers and individual contributors alike may worry about meeting goals and deadlines, and even have concerns about team collaboration.   Before I jump into how you can thwart these concerns, allow me to offer you some peace of mind:  YOU CAN TOTALLY DO THIS.  In fact, many Marketo Engage employees have been working from home for more than five years; some for more than 10 years like myself.  And, it's no secret that these hardworking stay-at-home professionals turned a Silicon Valley homegrown software company into a multi-billion-dollar powerhouse in the SaaS industry.   If working from home really did stifle creativity and collaboration, as some corporate professionals suggest, then we never would have built a best-in-class application that leads in the Gartner Magic Quadrant.  In fact, we created a culture of family, togetherness, and entrepr
