Email Component Error Display

I was recently blocked from sending an email due to one of the URLs in a button being too long, and not adhering to Marketo’s URL shortener. Because there was no error message that would have alerted me to the cause of this email not sending, I spent a lot of time (and tokens) trying to diagnose the root cause.

In Marketo Engage, erroneous email components should clearly display the error that will cause the email to not send or be delivered, so the editor can resolve the issue.

Hmm. Note this is tough-to-impossible to implement for all cases because URLs can come from {{lead.tokens}} and {{my.tokens}}, neither of which are resolved until send time!

As a workaround you can add some logic to the template using a Velocity {{my.token}}, e.g.

#if( $mktmail.DefaultTrackingHost.equals("localhost") )
<style>
a[href].over-url-max-length:after {
content: "URL too long! \A" attr(href);
white-space: pre;
text-align: left;
text-transform: none;
background-color: red;
color: white;
font: 10px/20px Verdana,Helvetica,sans-serif;
padding: 4px 6px;
margin: -10px 0 0 6px;
position: absolute;
border-radius: 4px;
border: 1px solid white;
}
</style>
<script>
if(document.location.hostname.endsWith(".marketodesigner.com")){
document.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded", function(e){
Array.from(document.links)
.filter( (link) => link.href.length > 1024 )
.forEach( (link) => link.classList.add("over-url-max-length") );
});
}
</script>
#end

Then you’ll get a visual notification in Preview:

Hi, @Serendipitous_Spirit4c10 , was this in old email editor or new email designer? Which one are you using, just so we know?
