Automatic Email Tracking Control Based on Lead Consent
Enable Marketo Engage to automatically enable or disable email tracking pixels at the recipient level based on a dedicated lead field, supporting compliance with evolving privacy and ePrivacy requirements across multiple countries worldwide.
As privacy regulations increasingly require explicit user consent for email tracking, consent to receive marketing emails cannot automatically be interpreted as consent to track email opens. Organizations need a scalable way to respect different legal requirements across markets.
Currently, native email open tracking is controlled at the email-asset level. This means organizations must maintain two versions of each email (tracked and untracked) and use Smart Campaign routing to ensure recipients receive the correct version based on their tracking consent. This creates additional asset management, campaign configuration, testing, and maintenance overhead.
We propose introducing a recipient-level tracking control that automatically suppresses the email tracking pixel when a designated lead field is set to True (default: False).
This would allow marketers to use a single email asset while Marketo automatically applies the recipient's tracking consent preferences at send time.
The capability should:
-
Support a configurable lead field to determine whether email tracking pixels are enabled.
-
Default to tracking disabled unless explicit tracking consent is recorded.
-
Automatically suppress tracking pixels for recipients without consent.
-
Preserve native Marketo email functionality and reporting wherever tracking consent is available.
-
Ensure untracked opens do not negatively affect lead scoring, campaign triggers, or automated workflows.
This would provide a simpler, scalable, and operationally efficient approach to managing consent-based email tracking, helping organizations meet country-specific privacy requirements without introducing unnecessary campaign complexity.
