Within Analytics, what do Smart Lists do?

Getting started with reports in Analtycis, using mostly campiagn and email reports so far. I understand how to use the "setup" tab, I don't understand what the "smart list" tab is for.  Can someone point me towards some resources or give me some examples to get me thinking on the right track? 

Some things I'd like to do...but I'm guessing not with smartlists: 
* fliter/segment data by email template used
* filter/segment data by tags (like channel or other)

Any ideas?

Here is a good article on Smart Lists (https://community.marketo.com/MarketoArticle?id=kA050000000KytPCAS)

Like it says in the article, smart lists can be filtered by behavioral, demographic, or metadata attributes.

I'd suggest just making some tests and pulling in random filters to see how it works.
