When do I need custom cookies for SEO tracking?

If I'm not using PPC, do I need to do any of the advanced cookie changes to track SEO keywords?  Marketo has the field "Original Search Phrase" and this *seems* to track search keywords, whether the lead arrives on the homepage or on a landing page.

Steven are you referring to the technique described in the Capturing Search Engine and PPC info on Landing Pages help article?  It does seem redundant with the out of box capability recording the original referrer, search engine and search phrase.
