What's the difference between creating a snippet and a template?

Hi,

This is a very basic question, but when do I want to use a snippet vs. build the text/image in directly to the template?

Let's say when I create a "unsubscribe link", what would be the best practice?  To create a snippet, or place it directly into my email template?

Regards,
Ronald

Here's a common use case: We have four email templates for our global organization (23 countries) to use.  Each country requires a country-specific footer anytime they send out an email.  We have created 23 country-specific email footer snippets.  At the bottom of every email template, there is an editable region with red text that says "Please replace with your country-specific footer".  Which is done by clicking on the gear and selecting "replace with snippet".  We do the same thing with country-specific social media toolbars that are part of every email.
