Uploading and Updating Leads

Hi there,

I'm trying to clean up some of the data that we have in our Marketo, so I'm doing it a country at a time, and have downloaded all the contacts for ANZ.  If I clean, de-dup and update this data, how do I re-upload it to overwrite the exisiting data?

Hi Juli, Marketo will automatically overwrite information based on email addresses -- assuming that the fields aren't blocked from list imports. If there are new email addresses, then new records will be created. Any email addresses not on your list won't be updated.

You will be able to tell at the import stage if the fields are blocked from list imports. To change these preferences (something that you'd probably just want to do temporarily), go into the Admin section, and change the "block field updates from" on each field that you need to be able to update via the list import.

    Hi Dory!

    Thank you for confirming this.  If this is the case, then how have I got multiple leads with the same email address?  (I have only been working for this company for 3 weeks so the data is all new to me).

    Is there a way to dedup all the duplicate leads?

    Hi Juli, you can't dedup automatically, but in the Lead Database there is a list called Possible Duplicates. You can merge or delete leads from any lead database view. As for the creation of the dupes, I often find that they come from SFDC if you aren't preventing dupes there. Marketo just takes in everything that SFDC syncs over, I don't believe it dedupes when that information comes in.
