Hi. Sorry if this seems like a really basic question as I am new to Marketo.

From what I understand, marketo will set a initial status on the entry of a lead.

Is there a way for me to pass a status to Marketo and have marketo do nothing to that status and just pass it along to salesforce?

I am basically just trying to flag invalid leads even before they come into marketo.

Can you explain more about what you mean when you say "have Marketo do nothing"?  Also, how are lead getting created in Marketo?

we have a 3rd party vendor passing leads to marketo. most are good leads but some are invalid because for example, we don't serve the specific state the lead is from. so we want to pass the lead with a status of 'invalid' into marketo. Marketo will pass Invalid to salesforce where it will just sit in salesforce until the lead is ready to be worked on (whereupon the status will be changed).

is there a way for me to do that?

What I would suggest is creating a custom field on the Lead/Contact objects in Salesforce that would hold this status.  Then you could ask the 3rd party vendor to place the Invalid status in that field when they pass them to Marketo.  You would then have a trigger campaign with a Lead Is Created trigger and a filter for your custom field in the smart list with a value of Invalid.  That would pick up any leads created with the Invalid status, and you could use the flow of that campaign to sync them to SFDC.  Does that all make sense?
