Track Video Usage on a Landing Page?

It has been suggested to a track video on landing page by 1) adding a button or clickable thumbnail of the video 2) just tracking clicks of that video button 3) and then playing the video through a pop-up lightbox.

Question 1)  Is there a smarter way to do this? I would love to see if someone watched more than 3 minutes of a video.

Question 2)  Can anyone recommend a video lightbox that is easy to deploy?
