Time exceeded in opportunity stages

I want to create alerts / reports that alert our sales reps when the ideal time has been exceeded in a certain stage in the sales cycle - has anyone created these before? (ideally both - an alert and a weekly report) what are the best contstraints to use - should it be date added to opportunity + stage=x then the flow step is wait x days, if not updated send y alert?

If you have the appropriate lead lifecycle campaigns developed in Marketo (I've included our example below), you can add specific wait steps after the initial alerts have been sent out.  And then filter on "if lead lifecycle status is still xxx" or "revenue stage is still xxx", then send out reminder/escalation alerts.
