Sync Lead Updates to SFDC with Contact updates

I've been getting some complaints from Salesforce users who see our Marketo Interface user as being the "Last Modified By" user in a Salesforce Contact record. I looked at the lead in Marketo and I see in the Activity Log that there is an activity of Sync Lead Updates to SFDC. The Contact fields being updated are Read Only for Marketo profile in SFDC.

Could there be another permission on the profile that is overuling te field level securitysuch as "modify all data"?

Marketo user profile does not have "Modify All Data" permission in Salesforce. Is there any additional place in Marketo admin that could help fix this?

No, it shouldn't be anything on the Marketo side. What marketo can and cannot do in SFDC is goverened in SFDC rather than in Marketo, usually by the profile assigned to the sync user. I think the best thing to do would be to reach out to Marketo support to help go through the issue with some example records.
