Suppressing emails outside of Engagement Programs

I'm in the process of building out my first engagement program have a question about suppressions. Is there a function within engagement programs to prevent those enrolled within the program from receiving emails outside of the program? We'll be running one-off email campaigns at the same time as nurture programs, so we would want to prevent engagement program members from receiving one-off emails. The only way I can think of achieving this is to add a step to suppress engagement program members from each one-off email, but hoping someone can provide guidance on a less tedious way to achieve this.
