Snippets no longer working on images?

Hi there. Having used the snippets feature on images in the past, I was disappointed to hear today that this feature is no longer available (advised by support following a query on an email template).

I have a segmentation built which shows different images to each segment using the dynamic content feature. This regularly changes, so a snippet is the ideal way to do this to save having to update multiple emails. I use this function for copy without any issues however.

Can someone offer any guidance as to why this was removed, along with a suitable workaround?
