Smart List for SFDC leads converted to contacts

There's a general definitional mismatch between SFDC and Marketo on the word "conversion/converted."  What we want to do is automatically send an email when a SFDC lead is converted to and SFDC contact.  I can't seem to get the smartlist right using the fields "lead was converted" or "lead conversion."

This should be a simple task, but I can't get it right.  Any advice?

According to Marketo, converted means they became a known lead in marketo, for example, through filling out a form.

To send an email when the SFDC lead is converted to an SFDC contact, you could try using the trigger of lead status is changed. Leads that are converted to Contacts typically have a converted lead status in SFDC. Would this work for you?
