Send went to someone not on our send list. How is this possible?

Hello,

When we send out our e-Blasts we usually receive a bunch of Out of Office replies immediately. One of these was from someone that we did not send to, nor are they in our Marketo/Salesforce CRM. We also checked based on his name and company, and he is in neither systems. How is this possible?

This person may be a recipient on a distribution list for an alias email (helpdesk@, etc.), or emails from the recipient address are forwarded to them (someone left the company, etc.). Then the out of office would reply to the original sender.

Did you use the Forward to a Friend functionality? That's also a way in which you could get someone who is not in your database.

I agree with Kim - sometimes when a contact leaves a company, their email is automatically forwarded to someone else, and they may be out of office, triggering their response to you.

However, the company it went to is not even in our CRM. How can that be?

That could be the forward to a friend then.. anyone can forward your email and being that it still comes "from" you/your email, you would get the Out of Office reply.  I wouldn't worry too much about it unless the person replies or unsubscribes, in which case you can always just ask them where they received the email from, or start a conversation with them if they are a potential prospect!  Best of luck!
