Segmentations don't show database changes

What triggers segmentations to refresh their Approximate count?

We've removed stale people from our database, but all of the segmentations are stuck on old counts. Going into the smart list for each segment provides an accurate count, but the approximate count does not update even if the segmentation is unapproved, edited, and re-approved.
