Salesfore Marketing Cloud and Marketo/SFDC integration - mutually exclusive?

Does anyone here use Salesforce Marketing Cloud as well as a Marketo/SFDC connection?  I'm struggling to find any information of whether these are either/or scenarios or if typically folks exclusively work with the Marketo/SFDC scenario.  Any insights folks can provide would be helpful to deepen my understanding.  TIA
