Problem importing list - only 4 with invalid emails processed?

Can anyone (Marketo support included, I've created a case, waiting to hear back) tell me why when I attempt to upload a list, it tells me there was an error with 4 of them, lists them, but will not import the rest of the list?

Are you sure it did not upload the rest of the list?

yes, I'm sure, I've spot-checked and do not find the 900+ people I'm trying to import in my Leads database in Marketo.

the error is something like, "warning:  4 with invalid emails" -- but it did import those 4.   they are not the first 4, either.  very strange.

just tried again after removing some columns...390 imported, all with same "invalid email" warning...?
