Opportunity Analyzer Report with Dynamics - Is it ONLY based on Relationship Roles

First, our company is still on Dynamics 2011 On Prem. I'm a CRM expert, and it's killing me.

I was told by Marketo Rep when we first started that to use the Opportunity Analyzer Report and to get the Opportunities to push into Marketo and show on Opportunity Tab on records in Marketo, we had to use the Relationship Role option from Contact to Opportunity.

Is this the only way for it to work in 2011?

Does it work with Connections in 2013 and above?

Yes, connections will work with newer versions of CRM.
