Munchkin return object

It seems that there isn't an object that is returned or something to work off of with the Munchkin API.  Is this by design?  

I have no way of knowing whether a custom field associated by an email address has been populated or not.  Ideally, I'd like to populate this custom field if it is empty and I certainly don't want to override/update the custom field if it is already set.

Thoughts...?

The Munchkin API is used to send data into Marketo. You can use the SOAP or REST APIs to query based on Munchkin ID to handle this type of logic.
