Marketo and SFDC integration - Lead Status field

I hope somebody can help me out.
We have Marketo and SFDC integrated and all seems to be working fine, except one issue the status field.
The status field in Marketo is mapped to the Status field (lead) in SFDC, problem here is that we both use status for a different reason, is there any way to block that one field from updating when we sync up to SFDC? I realize we can block updates from coming down, how do we block them from going up?  Unfortunately I do not have access to SFDC so I need to call a colleague to make any changes to it, and they say that the Status (Lead) field is one that they are not able to change. Does this make sense to anybody?  Is there a way I can do this?

The easy path here is to create a custom "status2" field and use that within mkto.

For more advanced options consider:
  • Turning off sync on the field (contact support)
  • Remapping the field (contact support)
