Managing multiple mailing lists subscriptions

We would like to allow people to subscribe to our mailing lists by topic/type of periodical we send out. Is there a best practice to do this?

We're new to Marketo and in our current CRM system, we have these lists set up as separate folders (36 different folders). With our current, non-Marketo subscription forms, we show various combinations of these lists with checkboxes that can be checked to subscribe.

The suggestion we were given to replicate this in Marketo is to create a Y/N custom field for each of these mailing lists. I'm concerned that it will clutter a lead record to have a long list of mailing list fields.  Does anyone have any tips?

...Seems like if you use Marketo custom fields for the subscription info you will not need to have these fields on the lead layout in the CRM. You may choose to have the preferences as part of the campaign history in salesforce though...

Thanks Mark. We're currently using a different type of CRM system (InterAction) so we're hoping to keep the subscription history in this CRM in sync with Marketo.

The salesforce aspect is good to know since we're strongly considering a switch to salesforce eventually.
