List Upload de-duped against Lead Database

It's frustrating that uploading a list creates new leads. It would be nice if Marketo checked email addresses in the list against those in the database and added those leads from the database to the list, rather than creating a brand new record.

This would be helpful for instances when a list can't be pulled another way. For example, if there's a list of tradeshow attendees, but some of them are already in Marketo, you'd just want to upload the list and not worry about duplicates.

I know that this is an older thread but I'm glad to see it. I thought I was going crazy!

I just came to a company where their Marketo instance is behaving exactly like this. In my previous company we didn't seem to have this issue but here, I can't upload any static list without creating dups. It even occurs if I just upload a list of existing lead emails with no other fields. Additionally frustrating is Marketo is longing the lead activity separately. If I upload an existing lead like rusty.hall@email.com to a list, it creates a dup with it's own activity history and even more frustrating, it will log all new activity to the new rusty.hall@email.com. Did anyone ever find a reason/fix for this? I'm getting tired of using "Email is: (Insert 1000+ emails) to create smart lists before I can even start an event program.

This is not the default behavior.  If you're seeing something different you should file a support ticket to help figure out what's happening.

Thanks for the reply and the confirmation Kenny! I really appreciate it. I'll get with support on the issue.
